CHAPTER 9
Aron Watson & Shaniece Grant

Chapter Summary:

Boxer sustained a long time healing of his split hoof, which didn't stop him from working as hard as normal. As the rebuilding of he windmill began, all that mattered to Boxer before he reached the age of retirement was just being able to witness the new and improved windmill. The laws of Animal Farm on when animal's retirement age is, was topic of disscussion. This meaning no animals has yet to retire on pension. Meanwhile, food and rations were decreasing as time went on. Squealer spoke on the topics of "readjustment", never as a "reduction" because there was a clear difference of growth from Jones' days and Animal Farm currently.During the autum, 31 pigs were borned between 4 sows; it was obvious that Napoleon helped produce them because he was the only boar on the farm. Therefore, a school room would be built in the farmhouse garden. Like every other month Napoleon kept reducing rations. Then Napoleon decided to take away sugar from the pigs because he claimed that it was fattening them up. Napoleon basically started starving the animals. This was because whenever the animals thought they were about to eat their daily meal, time kept being pushed back. Then whenever the animals did get to , their meal might as well had been nothing. Napoleon commanded that once a week Animal Farm should have something called Spontaneous Demonstration, which celebrate the trumphs and struggles. Moses; the raven, came back to the farm unchanged talking about the Sugarcandy Mountian and how its such a happy place for them the poor animals can go to be at rest. When Boxer's hoof finally had healed, he began to work hard then he ever did before. Over time, since Boxer didn't take Clover and Benjamin's advise to take car of his health. Boxer ended up suffering the hard way becuase one day he passed out. By that time, Boxer had to be taken to a hospital in Willingdon to get beter treatment. A couples days before Boxer had gotten too weak, he murmured that "Napoleon is always rigtht". But unfortunately, Boxer got tooken away in a knacker's van and ended up passing away. After Boxer's death, squealer's demeanour suddenly changed.

Squealer-Pravda

Squealer remained the same, up until the Boxer had died. In the beginning squealer did notified the other animals about all the rations that Napoleon was doing but now squealer began warning the other animals about what could happen to them if they weren't able to work anymore.

Boxer- Unskilled Working People

When Boxer passed away, it symbolized what would happen to the other animals if they weren't able to work any more. The animals were not eligible to recieve retirement anymore because of all the reductions Napoloen had made. Therefore, the "disabled" animals would have to suffer death because they werent able to help the so-called up bringing of Animal Farm.

Napoleon- Joseph Stalin

Napoleon kind of had a change of heart in this chapter by him allowing Moses to retured to the farm. By letting the religion on Anial Farm, this gave the animals hope to say because now the animals had a better sense of "peace of mind". Meaning they really didn't have to worry about the struggles they were going through on daily bases.

Quotes

  • (Pg.77) Whenever the animals notice that they were receiving food, Squealer would always speak of it as a "readjustment", never as a reduction. He always found ways to persuade any animal to believe whatever Napoleon wished to tell them. This was a representation of Napoleons influence on the Russian Newspaper (Pravda).

  • (Pg.85) Squealer tell the animals that he was present in Boxer's last moments, and that Boxer wanted to have been passed on before the completion of the windmill. Squealer also says that his last words were "Long live comrade napoleon." This was once again used to keep the animals believing that Napoleon had their best interest at heart.

  • (Pg.84) "They're taking Boxer to the knacker's!" At this moment the Animals realize that boxer is not going away to the veterinarian to be cured, he is going to be slaughtered. Once this information is realized, they run to squealer in hopes that he can stop this. He only uses his persuasive attitude to fool the animals into believing that the writing on the truck is old. This is another way that Stalin used media influences to keep his people believing that many of his terrible doings weren't really happening.

Event Parallels
  • The animals realized that it was time for someone to become the official leader of their farm. It was obvious that Napoleon would fill that position. This examplified the time when Stalin became the official leader of Russia. Soviet Russia claimed that the people would vote for their officials, but Stalin was the only candidate. There was no real choice.

  • The pigs now allow themselves to eat much more than the rest of the animals and they are now allowed to drink alcohol. This is representative of a command economy (higher ruling power decides what the people do) within Animal Farm. A command economy was also present in Russia, Stalin decided what goods and services were produced and how they were distributed.

  • After The Battle of the Windmill, Boxer's damaged hoof represented the damage done to the Russian working class when Germany invaded Russia, killing many people and destroying farms.

  • Napoleon held something that was called a "Spontaneous Demonstration" every week, It's said purpose was to celebrate the farms' many victories. This is similar to Soviet Russia because Stalin also made his people join together to celebrate their "victories" and to praise him as an excellent leader with statues that represented him.

  • Boxer being hurt and sent to the slaughter house in exchange for whiskey, showed Napoleon's true disregard for all of the work Boxer had done. This is a portrayal of Stalin's disregard for the working class in Russia during this time. Stalin would use his people for his own benefit, taking everything that he could from them and once they were not useful any longer he would get rid of them completely.
